American Red Cross Safety Training for Girl Scouts

Adult CPR and Standard First Aid

Service Unit Costs and Arrangements

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring training in Adult CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) and/or First Aid. I am a volunteer trainer and will work with service units or other groups to train leaders and/or older girls. The combination of Adult CPR and Standard First Aid fulfills the Girl Scout requirement for a level 1 first aider.

Classes Offered:

o        Adult CPR only – approx 4.5 hours

o        Adult CPR with AED (Automated External Defibrillation) – approx 5 hours

o        Standard First Aid only – approx 3.5 hours.

o        Adult CPR and First Aid taken together – approx 7 hours

o        Adult CPR/AED and First Aid taken together – approx 7.5 hours

Scheduling:

I will train on either weekends or week nights. Factors that impact training dates and times include: where the class is located, whether/when the equipment is available and other potential schedule conflicts. Please have a couple possible dates in mind when you contact me.

I will provide:

o        Manikins (up to 30) with disposable lungs (rented from Council)

o        Training manuals for use during the class only (rented from Council)

o        The training DVD

o        The paper tests and answer sheets, the Red Cross paper work, and certificates (issued at the end of the class).

o        First Aid training supplies (bandages and gloves)

o        Disposable breathing barriers

o        Pencils, name tags, and other miscellaneous training supplies

o        Additional training manuals and breathing barriers for those who wish to purchase their own

The service unit must provide or arrange for:

o        A “classroom” with sufficient floor space for the manikins

o        A TV with DVD player and a DVD remote control.

o        Access to the training site 45 minutes before the class and 30 minutes after the class

o        Publicity and promotion and a guarantee of at least eight students.

Costs:

The per-person cost for the class covers all supplies noted above and the Red Cross certification fee. (My time is donated.) These costs assume the equipment is available to be rented from the Council and the participants use the Council’s training manuals.

o        CPR - $15

o        First Aid - $15

o        Combination CPR/First Aid - $20

o        (optional) Red Cross Community First Aid/CPR/AED Participant Manual - $16

**Note- there may be an additional mileage charge if class is located a significant distance from St. Paul.

Contact information:

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or wish to discuss scheduling training.

American Red Cross Safety Training for Girl Scouts

Course Desciptions:

Adult CPR:

Learn how to care for victims approximately 12 years of age or older. Topics include: Recognizing emergencies, Checking a conscious or unconscious victim, Giving rescue breaths, First aid for choking, Recognizing the signals of a heart attack, CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), and Using a breathing barrier & disposable gloves. Participants must demonstrate the skills and take a written test to be certified. Certification is good for 1 year.

Adult CPR/AED:

Learn all of the above plus how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator.) Participants must demonstrate the skills and take a written test to be certified. Certification is good for 1 year

Standard First Aid:

Learn how to recognize and respond to life-threatening or non-life-threatening emergencies. Practice bandaging and splinting and learn a plan of action to recognize and deal with: Unconsciousness; Bleeding; Broken bones; Head, neck, and back injuries; and Sudden illness, including stroke, diabetic emergencies, seizures, fainting and poisoning. Participants must demonstrate the skills and take a written test to be certified. Certification is good for 3 years

Alternatives:

Blended Learning Courses:

Red Cross offers a combination of online training with in-person skills review and testing. Participants can take a portion of the class, including the written test, online and then follow that with an approximately 2 hour group session to review and demonstrate the skills. Certification is good for 1 or 3 years, depending on which course is being taken.

Review Courses:

If all participants are currently certified (or expired no more than a month) a “review” course can be offered. The course covers all of the material in an abbreviated fashion and the timeframe for the class can be shortened by approximately one-third. Students are assumed to know the general concepts and time is spent only on reviewing skills and testing. Participants must demonstrate the skills and take a written test to be certified. Certification is good for 1 or 3 years, depending on which course is being reviewed.

Challenge Courses:

If all participants have been certified several times and do no need a review of the skills a “challenge” is an option which takes less than an hour per participant. (Starting times can be staggered.) Participants must simply demonstrate the skills and take a written test to be certified. Certification is good for 1 or 3 years, depending on which course is being challenged.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss any of the class options in more detail.

Girl Fest 2010

EVERYTHING COOL ABOUT BEING A GIRL SCOUT

Changes to Girl Fest 2010

Over the past few weeks Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys has been sharing information with volunteers about Girl Fest 2010. The response to this exciting all-girl festival has been tremendous—exceeding our expectations. We are committed to keeping this event affordable. To accommodate all girls interested in participating, Girl Fest 2010 has been moved to November 2010.

  • The volunteer planning committee will continue its work. If you are interested in serving on the Girl Fest planning committee, contact Shelly Burzinski at 800-845-0787.
  • We will be able to secure additional funding for this signature girl event by getting into the funding cycle of foundations and corporations.
  • Information regarding the November date will be coming shortly. Troops will receive a Girl Fest flier with the “Save the Date” magnet soon.

Girl Fest 2010 will be the “must be at” event of the year for all girls in River Valleys. Some service units were planning to attend the council-wide Cookie Rally at Girl Fest in place of holding a service unit Cookie Rally. River Valleys’ staff, in partnership with service unit volunteers, will plan regional Cookie Rallies to be held on January 9, 2010. Additional information regarding locations will be available on the River Valleys website soon.

Trees for the 21st Century

As you know, it is more important than ever for Girl Scouts to Discover, Connect, and Take Action to protect our planet. There is a new GSUSA-endorsed patch program. Perfect for the spring or leading up to Earth Day, our program gives girls and leaders all they need to know to engage in rewarding "green" activities. Cost-effective at $3.50 per girl, the program provides tree seedlings and a unique patch for Girl Scouts to earn after completing the activities. Visit http://www.erthnxt.org/programs/trees21.html for more information.

Trees for the 21st Century is a unique educational and tree-planting program for children ages 6 to 18, involving science-based learning, tree-planting, and ongoing stewardship activities.

Through the Trees for the 21st Century initiative, we aim to teach children about the value of the environment; expand the world inventory of trees to protect and improve natural resources; and to help children value long term stewardship of trees, Earth's "perfect organic machines."

Plant Trees and Have Fun with your
Troop or Group!

We offer Tree Kits<http://www.erthnxt.org/programs/order.html> that provide everything a youth group and leader need to take action and enhance learning through tree planting and related activities.

ERTHNXT organizes volunteer tree-planting events<http://www.erthnxt.org/programs/events.html> for children and youth to supplement our self-led Tree Kits and Activity Guides.

ERTHNXT has created a safe online community<http://www.erthnxt.org/programs/erthnxt_community.html> for children and their mentors to share their tree planting experiences and report stewardship efforts.
